Why Families Love Pets

No matter what your situation, how many children you have, where you live, or even how much money you have, families love having pets.

From goldfish, dogs, cats, guinea pigs to snakes!

My (Danny) first pet was a cat called Lucy when I was young child.

She was so adorable, cuddly, I loved her to bits. Then she got run over by a car! I actually looked in a refuse sack where my Dad told me she was and I looked in. It was rather traumatic! I also realised then that sadly cats don’t have 9 lives…

We then got another cat but sadly we had to find her a new home as I became allergic to her. I got tested and the clinic where I had the test said I was allergic to all animal fur! I was so upset.

Luckily they were wrong as my next pet obsession became dogs and I found I wasn’t allergic to them- wahoo! When I first met my wife’s parents I also met their dogs and I was instantly in love.

Fast forward a couple of decades later and now we have our own dog! She’s called Roxy (pictured above), a fox red Labrador and is now 4.

Despite her nature to eat everything in sight and to steal my slippers from time to time, she is utterly adorable and she is very much a part of our family.

So, why do families love pets? Well, sometimes, we need interaction with another being that doesn’t talk back at us! Also, a form of communication that focuses on emotions, rather our brains.

We have two teenage children and seeing them cuddle Roxy and play with her, I believe, really helps them manage their emotions, feel calmer and appreciate the sense of caring for another being.

Other pets of course don’t quite have the same interaction with us, like goldfish!

I’m sure you’ll agree though, if you own a pet, that having them brings so much joy.

And if you don’t have one and you’re tempted, go for it! It’s one of the biggest pleasures in life. It really is.
